Retrofitting new bay windows or before installing windows in a new bay window requires measuring the openings. As a do-it-yourself homeowner, you can save a portion of the costs by measuring the openings using a procedure used by professional installers.
1
Work from inside the room. Pry off the casing trim at the top, bottom and sides of each window with a wood chisel. This exposes the gaps between the window frames and the framing all around. If necessary, use a stepladder to access the upper casings. Skip this step if no windows are installed.

Measure the large opening between the inside faces of the trimmers at the bottom, middle and across the top of the opening. Write the shortest measurement on a note pad and label it 'Front width.' Measure the opening from the surface of the sill to the underside of the header that runs across the top of the opening. Note the measurement as 'Front height.'
4
Identify the window at the right side of the bay, as if standing inside the room. Use marking paint and spray the letter 'R' on the sill. Check the trimmers as before. Measure the width of the opening at the bottom, middle and top and note the narrow measurement with a label 'Right width.' Measure the height of the opening and note it as 'Right height.'
5
Repeat the procedure to mark the left widow opening with an 'L' and check the trimmers. Note the width and height measurements as 'Left width and height.'
