Bandini (English: Captured Female) is an Indian soap opera produced by Ekta Kapoor of Balaji Telefilms. It starred Ronit Roy and Aasiya Kazi and was set against the backdrop of Gujarat in Dharampur a village near Surat in Gujarat. The show premiered on 19 January 2009 on NDTV Imagine.^[1][2][3]

Santu Waghela is a poor but spirited girl who lives in the village of Dharampur with her maternal grandfather, Madhav Solanki, an experienced diamond cutter working for the middle-aged diamond merchant Dharamraj Mahiyavanshi. As an incentive to his best worker, Dharamraj offers to arrange and sponsor Madhav's granddaughter's marriage. Hours before the wedding, the bridegroom backs out and Madhav's fellow workers get agitated. Dharamraj, a widower, comes forward to marry the bride, Santu. For Dharamraj, the decision to marry Santu is purely a business calculation for appeasing his workforce. Dharamraj is still in love with his dead wife Subhadra, who has left him with 5 children: Hiten, Kadambari a.k.a. Kaddu, Maulik, Birwa and Suraj. Once home, he ignores Santu and she is constantly abused by his older sister, Tarulata a.k.a. Taru. After a long time, however, Dharamraj and most of his family members accept Santu as a member of the Mahiyavanshi family. Dharamraj finds his long-lost son Arjan. But eventually, because of some misunderstandings and complications, Arjan assaults Dharamraj. Birwa, trying to save her father, accidentally kills Arjan. To save Birwa, Santu takes the blame for the murder and goes to jail.

After 10 years Santu returns from prison. The Mahiyavanshis don't want her. Everyone in the Mahiyavanshi house is pretending to live happily. But Santu forces her way into the house, takes charge and starts many quarrels among family members. This brings many hidden problems to light. Dharamraj has shut himself away in a room and stopped mixing with people. But Santu with her love and honesty once again wins Dharamraj's love and family gets reunited. A woman named Megha comes forward with her son, Vishal and she claims that Dharamraj is the father of this boy. To everyone's surprise, medical tests prove that Vishal is actually Dharamraj's son. However, Dharamraj denies having any relationship with Megha. Then Santu discovers that Vishal is her own son, who was born while she was in prison. Megha had stolen Vishal from the jail hospital and Santu had been told that the baby was dead. Santu and Dharamraj reunite. Vishal comes to stay with Dharamraj and Santu, but Megha kidnaps him again.

After 16 years, Dharamraj's grandchildren have grown up. Santu is still waiting for her son Vishal to come home. After an extensive search, Vishal is found. He seems to be a good person, but this is just a mask. Megha has poisoned his mind against the Mahiyavanshis. He wants to separate Dharamraj and Santu. Dharamraj and Hiten, on finding out the truth, chase Vishal out of the house. Santu is shocked and becomes ill. Dharamraj is forced to take Santu to Vishal's house. But Vishal is exposed. Disillusioned, Santu comes back to the Mahiyavanshi house. Then Megha reappears and uses Vishal to get back at the Mahiyavanshi family. Vishal forces Dharamraj and Santu to leave the house. They go and live in Mumbai, where Dharamraj starts a new diamond business. After some time, they return to Dharampur. Meanwhile, Vishal has changed for the better. He realizes that Megha has used him as a pawn. He apologizes to his parents. Santu and Dharamraj forgive Vishal when they see that his regret is genuine. Santu finds out that she is pregnant once again. The whole Mahiyavanshi family is happy together.

Bandini is a Indian soap opera that airs on NDTV Imagine in India and Worldwide. Bandini is Asia's #2 Most Watched and Awarded show since present date. (January 19, 2009).

Synopsis

Bandini follows Santu (Aasiya Kazi) who is a small town girl who has a Forced marriage with a Diamond merchant, Dharamraj Mahiyavanshi (aka D M) (Ronit Roy). Despite Santu's relaxed lifestyle prior to marriage, she settles well into marital life.Santu, being Dharamraj's second wife, encounters some friction as she settles into her new household. Soon all members of the family become attached towards Santu, except Tarulata, Dharamraj's elder sister. Dharam Raj soon accepts Santu as his second wife, first being Subadhra, who passed away nine years prior. Everyone is happy but a Subadhra look-alike anters the town causing flutter in the family. She earns a place in the family members' heart and is welcomed into the house with open arms while Santu is neglected. Santu's sister, Khemi marries Arjan, a youth from a nearby village. Santu and Tarulata soon realize that this lady is an imposter and are worried that Dharamraj might find out about Taru'a and Subadhra's secret, which Santu also knows about. Meanwhile Dharamraj starts his own investigation into the factuality of Subadhra's identity.

Soon, the curtains are raised on the matter that the new lady is working for greed and also on the secret between Tarulata and Subadhra... The secret is that Moulik is Taru's son and not Dharamraj's.. Tarulata soon finds out that Dharamraj's son is still alive and sets out to find him.It is revealed that Arjan is Subadhra's and Dharam Raj's son.. This relevation makes Khemi as Arjan's aunt. It is now left to Santu to decide on Khemi's and Arjan's future. Santu takes the decision that Arjun and Khemi have to dissolve their marriage. This decision is hard to abide by because Khemi is revealed to be pregnant.

Arjan hates the fact that Santu gets all the praise in the house and no one seems to care about Khemi and him. With Khemi being pregnant, Arjan decides to get his share of respect and property by hook or crook. Dharamraj and a drunken Arjan have an argument over this matter, in the melee, Arjan attacks D M with a baseball bat. He's knocked unconscious. Arjan decides to kill D M to end the matter once and for all. As he is going for the kill, Santu walks in. The next scene shows that Santu goes around the house declaring that she has killed Arjan. Ba tires to cover up Santu's declaration. But Santu pleads guilty ot the murder in front of the police and is arrested and handed a Life-Sentence in jail. Everyone believes that Santu is the killer and break all ties with her. The only person that believes Santu is the not the killer is Moulik. It is revealed that Birva was the killer having witnessed the fight between D M and Arjan.

After a 10 year leap, many things have now jailed. Santu learned how to read and write while she was in jail and seemed to make a a new friend Bunsuri( young bride to be). At the same time things back at home have seemed to change a lot as well. Hiten is now maalik of Dharmpaur, Toral is pregnant for the 3rd time after 2 miscarriages, Khemi is also known as Ben Ba and has a son Krishna, Kaddu and a girl Nandini, Champakalia is married and Birwa and Suraj are all grown up know. Birwa is just like her father, like to get work done and doesn't like any excuses. She brought the business to new heights. The biggest change of all is that the house is divided into half. One side with Moti Behn, Khemi, Babupuji, Krishna, and Maulik and the other side with Hiten, Toral, Kaddu, Birwa, Surag, and Nandini. This all happened because there was way to much fighting going on in the house, so they decided to divide the house up. What about Dharamraj???? Where is he???? Well the story goes as is, Khemi wanted an abortion cause she didn't want her child to live the mess of everything. The only way that khemi was going to keep the child if Dharamaj swore never to visit Santu or her name ever beginning said the house again. So, Dm took that deal in order to see his grandchild live. On that night he announced to everyone that he is no longer part of the family cause of the whole Santu thing.

Santu come back to dm house as a servant but eventually khemi finds out and they all say to santu to get out of the house which santu do so. In the meantime, she also finds out that while she was in jail kandu divorced her present husband and married sandeep who betrayed her, but still kandu seems to be happy with sandeep. santu comes back to dm's house to set things right which were going wrong. she tries to make the two families one again, but there were many things that were blocking her way.
